Shifting from Outcome to Identity
Most habit-breaking strategies focus entirely on outcomes (e.g., "I want to reach Day 90"). While goal-oriented, this approach leaves your core self-concept unchanged. If you still view yourself as an addict trying to be good, you will eventually return to your old patterns.
To build permanent self-control, you must shift your focus from what you want to achieve to who you want to become.
The Three Layers of Behavior Change
- Outcomes (The Outer Layer): Achieving a 90-day streak or downloading a blocker.
- Processes (The Middle Layer): Setting up morning routines, habit stacking, or cold showers.
- Identity (The Core Layer): Shifting your self-belief from "trying to quit" to "being an Operator."
Put this into practice
Willpower is not enough. Automate the friction by utilizing Severity Mode and physical lockout protocols.
Casting Votes Daily
Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you want to be. Striking the anvil daily is a vote for the Operator identity—a man who values focus, discipline, and long-term self-mastery.
